The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says an Oregon-based construction company will pay $180,000 to a pair of former employees who were subject to racial taunts on a Salt Lake City work site.
The EEOC says a construction foreman for Emmert International and others harassed Jonathan Redmon by calling him the n-word and “boy.” Redmon says he wasn’t put on a rehire list because of his complaints.
Another former employee will share in the settlement. The EEOC says John Brainich endured racial slurs because of his interracial marriage.
The Clackamas, Ore.-based heavy-haul and rigging specialist was relocating a century-old building in 2009 to make way for Salt Lake City’s new federal courthouse.
Emmert officials admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement. They didn’t immediately return a call Monday from The Associated Press.
