The amount of money that could be won in court for noneconomic damages in medical malpractice cases would be limited under a proposal being advanced by Hawaii lawmakers.
The limits would be set by a task force. The House Judiciary Committee passed the bill recently, and it now advances to the full House for a vote before moving over to the Senate.
Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu says enacting limits on the cost of medical lawsuits could eventually result in Hawaii being able to keep more doctors in-state.
The committee also passed bills granting legal immunity to on-duty emergency room physicians and discouraging plaintiffs from filing frivolous lawsuits.
