As many people across the nation watched on television Wednesday evening, a JetBlue airliner, scheduled on a cross country flight with 139 passengers and six crew members, made a safe emergency landing just after 6 p.m. (Pacific time) at Los Angeles International Airport.
Shortly into the scheduled Burbank to New York flight, the pilot reported problem with the front landing gear. The plane proceeded to circle southern California skies for some three hours following the 3:17 p.m. departure, burning off fuel before landing at LAX.
Except for some minor fire coming out of the front tires as they touched the ground, the plane, an Airbus A320, remained together and passengers walked off shortly after.
A National Transportation Safety Board investigation was to begin to see why the gear failed to retract after take off.
As the plane landed in Los Angeles, spectators congregated on buildings and stood on parked cars to watch the landing unfold.
