The state of Maryland says it will appeal the federal government’s denial of disaster aid to help the state and Baltimore city recover millions of dollars in riot-related costs.
A spokesman for Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said Monday the administration will appeal last month’s denial by the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the state’s request for a major disaster declaration.
Such a declaration would enable public agencies to recover 75 percent of their eligible costs. The state’s request included a $19.4 million estimate for emergency protective measures and damage to buildings and equipment.
Rioting, looting and arson broke out in Baltimore in late April following the death of Freddie Gray, who was injured in police custody. Six Baltimore police officers are awaiting trial on criminal charges in the case.
