Damascus, Va., Mayor Jack McCrady says he expects the insurer of a man whose car hit dozens of hikers during a parade to cover the victims’ medical costs.
McCrady says Deward Blevins’ family has turned over information necessary for the victims to submit medical bills.
The mayor tells the Bristol Herald Courier that the parade committee is going to review all aspects of the town’s Trail Days Parade to see how safety can be improved.
Blevins’ 1997 Cadillac plowed into the parade on May 18, injuring about 50 people. Police say the 87-year-old resident of Shady Valley, Tenn., had a medical issue that caused him to lose control of his car.
The injuries ranged from critical to superficial. The most seriously injured have been released from area hospitals.
