Crane safety experts from around the nation are meeting in New York City to discuss national standards following several deadly crane accidents this year.

Nine people died in two crane collapses earlier this year in Manhattan; others have died in crane accidents in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas.

The city tightened its regulations after the collapses, and has created a new system to track crane parts and certify repairs. A badly repaired crane turntable is believed to be behind a May 30 collapse on the Upper East Side.

The industry is expected to talk about whether the city’s tracking system can be used nationally. It’s also expected to talk about new proposed federal crane regulations, including a national testing system for crane operators.
