New York City wants to put more safety managers at high-rise construction sites following a spate of accidents at major projects.
The city Buildings department says that site safety managers should be required at construction sites for buildings at least 10 stories high. The managers are currently required at sites for buildings at least 15 stories high.
Commissioner Patricia Lancaster also says that general contractors and concrete manufacturers should register with her department for any type of construction work. She says the requirement would allow the city greater power to discipline contractors who don’t follow building codes.
Lancaster proposed the changes at a City Council hearing on Monday, responding to a number of accidents, including the death last month of a worker who fell 40 stories off a Donald Trump tower.
