The Utah Insurance Department’s Fraud Division is warning consumers about an increase in fake auto insurance policies being marketed to the Hispanic community using WhatsApp.
The department has not identified the sellers, but they believe them to be located outside of the U.S. The sellers have been marketing fake insurance policies to unsuspecting victims, who pay for the policies through WhatsApp. The seller sends buyers a forged certificate of insurance, and the fake policy lists a local insurance agent as their agent.
The department is warning that who purchase fake insurance policies may have their vehicle registration revoked for not having valid insurance.
The department is advising consumers to purchase insurance policies from legitimate insurance agents and not through WhatsApp.
