A Denver jury has determined a 29-year-old Colorado man was at fault in a fatal hit-and-run crash and has awarded the victim’s family $2.5 million.

The Denver Post reported the jury determined last week that Daniel Kliem was at fault in the June 26, 2011, crash that killed 25-year-old Abdul Alhilo.

Alhilo was racing his motorcycle down Federal Boulevard when an SUV driven by Kliem crossed three lanes of traffic and pulled in front of him. Kliem sped away and ditched his vehicle and passengers, including one bleeding from a head injury, a few blocks away.

He turned himself in two days later and eventually pleaded guilty.

Kliem’s lawyer says his client could appeal the award, which could take years to come through as insurance companies litigate over who should pay.
