A Superior Court judge has refused to set aside a ruling striking down a Los Angeles Police Department policy that made it easier for unlicensed drivers to keep their cars.
Judge Terry Green ruled last month that the policy violates California’s vehicle code.
Green refused Monday to stay his ruling while city officials appeal.
The order was implemented by L.A. Police Chief Charlie Beck.
It allows unlicensed drivers stopped by police to produce registration, valid ID and proof of insurance to avoid having their cars impounded.
The policy is supported by immigrant rights groups, who say the LAPD’s old rules were unfair to immigrants who couldn’t obtain driver’s licenses.
The police union challenged the policy, saying it put officers in the middle of a legal dispute over unlicensed drivers.
