Some $61 million in wrongful death claims have been filed by the family of a California man shot to death in April by a Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy.
The deputy was responding to a 911 family dispute call at a Keyes home when he was confronted by 32-year-old George Ramirez. The deputy tried to subdue him with a Taser stun gun before shooting Ramirez.
The Modesto Bee reported claims filed on Oct. 11 say Deputy Art Parra Jr. used unreasonable deadly force on a man with mental problems. Such claims are usually precursors to lawsuits.
A San Francisco legal firm filed a $15 million claim on behalf of Ramirez. Other claims filed on behalf of his parents, teenage brother and another family member each seek $10 million to $12 million.
