A group of Reno, Nev. emergency physicians has sued a woman who oversaw its billing and accounting, claiming she has embezzled more than $700,000 since 1999.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reported the Reno Emergency Physicians Association filed the lawsuit against Gretchen Swope, president of Medical Billing Inc.
The Washoe County District Court complaint seeks more than $1.5 million in damages.
Lawyer Thomas Beko, who represents the physicians who primarily work at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, says the alleged embezzlement was discovered in October through an audit.
Although the suit claims Swope stole money, no criminal charges have been filed against her, and Reno police say they have no record of the claims.
Swope could not be immediately reached for comment.
