The Utah Department of Transportation is testing a new type of snow fencing along in western Utah County.
The Daily Herald of Provo reports the agency has installed 2 miles of snow fencing in three areas along State Route 73 near Eagle Mountain, about 40 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
UDOT officials say the fence is designed to keep piles of snow from blowing into the middle of the highway.
Eagle Mountain Mayor Heather Jackson convinced UDOT to install the fencing after seeing how well it worked to reduce snow on the roads in nearby Saratoga Springs.
The fencing was installed this fall as UDOT widened the highway.
UDOT says if the fencing reduces or eliminates the snow hazard, it could be used elsewhere in the county.
