Judge Ito Sentences Ex-Attorney to 10 Years in State Prison

August 30, 2000

On Aug. 29, Former attorney Manny Lee Kreitenberg of Beverly Hills was sentenced to 10 years in state prison on one felony count of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and 13 counts of insurance fraud.

In addition, Kreitenberg was ordered to pay $26,000 in fines and $152,000 to a victim restitution fund. Judge Lance Ito found the 45-year-old man guilty on Feb. 17, 2000, after a three-week trial; however, Kreitenberg sought another attorney to represent him and prolonged the sentencing with continuances and motions.

As the ringleader of an organized group of doctors, lawyers, “cappers,” and Department of Motor Vehicle personnel, Kreitenberg played a pivotal role in the criminal conspiracy. The group targeted the elderly by setting them up in staged collisions. The defendants would intentionally slam on their brakes, causing rear end collisions, and in some cases, they would steal cash or credit cards from their victims while exchanging insurance information.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Automobile Insurance Fraud Division prosecuted this case. The case was a joint investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, the National Insurance Crime Bureau and the CDI Fraud Division. It is estimated that Kreitenberg’s group staged hundreds of traffic collisions and collected more than $5 million in fraudulent claims.
