The father of longtime NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin died from a house fire and his mother was left in critical condition after the blaze consumed the couple’s home near Charlotte.
Multiple news outlets reported that the 3,700-square-foot house in Stanley, North Carolina, owned by Denny Hamlin’s real estate firm, was half-engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived Sunday evening. Hamlin’s parents managed to escape the structure, but 75-year-old Dennis, who had already suffered from health problems, succumbed at the hospital, The Athletic .
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters were able to save some valuables from the house, Al.com .
The fire is one of a few tragedies that have hit professional athletes and their families in the Carolinas in the last few years.
Earlier this month, a Cessna jet carrying retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family crashed near the runway in Statesville. In 2023, an explosion in Mooresville, caused by a natural gas leak, destroyed a home owned by NFL player Caleb Farley, killing his father. In July of 2025, former Major League Baseball player Chase Childers drowned while trying to rescue swimmers at a South Carolina beach.
