In 2023, an explosion in Mooresville, caused by a natural gas leak, destroyed a home owned by NFL player Caleb Farley, killing his father. In July of 2025, former Major League Baseball player Chase Childers drowned while trying to rescue swimmers at a South Carolina beach.
