Two people died and 10 more were forced out of their dwellings by a fire that cut through an apartment complex near Savannah, Georgia.
Local news outlets reported that the blaze broke out early Sunday morning at The Commons, a complex in Wilmington Island. One person, Paula O’Brien, 73, was taken to a local hospital and died later from injuries. A second person, Karoline Motley, age 45, was found dead in the building after the fire was subdued, WJCL TV and the Savannah Morning News .
Ten more residents were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting. The Georgia Office of Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal’s Office planned to investigate the cause, news sites reported.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to all residents of the N Building. We are deeply grateful to the neighbors who stepped up to help by providing support during this difficult time,” the board of directors for the apartment complex said in a statement, WSAV-TV news reported.
