The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a tropical wave that could strengthen over the weekend, bringing heavy rain to parts of Florida.
Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 50 Florida counties ahead of the storm. It was in the Caribbean Friday and was expected to track over Cuba and into parts of western Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center and news .
The wave could bring more than 12 inches of rain over the next week or so, likely causing flooding in areas of the state already facing saturated soil, tidal floods and rising sea levels. Some forecasts had the center of the rainy system landing in the Big Bend area, not far from where Hurricane Idalia made landfall last year, news reports noted.
