A sitting North Carolina legislator has been nominated by Gov. Roy Cooper to serve on the state Industrial Commission.
Cooper told legislators at the beginning of the month of his choice of fellow Democratic Rep. Ken Goodman of Richmond County to join the six-member commission, which determines workers’ compensation awards. Goodman would leave the state House if the legislature officially confirms him. The North Carolina House voted unanimously last week to approve the nomination; the Senate is expected to vote this week, .
Goodman would succeed Yolanda Stith, whose term is now poised to expire at the end of April because a judge declared in December a 2016 law allowing her appointment to a commission vacancy be extended until 2025 violated the state constitution. Stith could appeal that ruling.
A trial court judge also ruled the same law unconstitutionally allowed departing Republican Gov. Pat McCrory to pick the commission’s leadership days before he left office.
