Environmental officials in Tennessee are advising the public not to come in contact with water in a lake near the Mississippi River in West Tennessee where a broken sewer line has resulted in “an extremely high level of E. coli.”
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation said Wednesday it has issued a temporary water contact advisory for McKellar Lake and the lower portion of Cypress Creek.
As of Tuesday, more than 10,000 dead fish have been documented.
The agency’s Division of Water Resources has been monitoring water quality, overseeing corrective action and working with state and local authorities in an effort to clean up the spill.
Officials have said the creek and the lake are not sources of drinking water.
