Gainesville, Fla., has moved a step closer to allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to set up shop in the city.
City commissioners on Nov. 5 voted to change the city’s land development code to allow dispensaries in certain areas zoned for offices, medical services or urban mixed use.
The commission must approve the ordinance a second time for it to become law.
The Florida Department of Health has approved such dispensaries as set forth in the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act, which authorized low-THC cannabis for certain patients.
Under the law, physicians can authorize marijuana use for cancer patients or other conditions that cause chronic symptoms like muscle spasms or seizures.
