A panel of lawmakers, safety advocates and health professionals back North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper’s proposal to install more cameras on school buses.
Cooper says the cameras will deter drivers from skirting around them as they pick up or unload students.
A committee of the Child Fatality Task Force voted this week to support Cooper’s plan, which would largely mimic the installation of red light cameras still up and running in towns and cities.
The legislation would allow school districts to enter contracts with companies to install cameras on school bus stop arms. Cameras would take a picture of the car and its license plate. The company would then send a citation and assess a fine 鈥� perhaps $250 鈥� to the car’s owner. There would be an appeals process.
