Former Dollar General Corp. Chief Executive Officer David Perdue has won the primary for Georgia’s Republican U.S. Senate nomination, beating insurance agent and current Congressman Jack Kingston in a close contest.
With all precincts reporting in yesterday’s runoff race, Perdue had 51 percent of the vote to 49 percent for Rep. Kingston, according to the Associated Press.
In the general election, Perdue will face Michelle Nunn, the Democratic nominee who is the daughter of former four-term Georgia Senator Sam Nunn.
Perdue is a cousin of Georgia’s former Republican Governor Sonny Perdue.
Both Nunn and Perdue are political newcomers.
They are running for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Saxby Chambliss.
