Two former insurance agents are vying to win the Democratic primary in Georgia today and the right to face incumbent Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, a Republican, in the November election.
Liz Johnson, a retired insurance agent from Statesboro faces former life insurance advisor Keith Heard of Fayettville.
Hudgens is unopposed in the Republican primary.
Heard served as a state representative for 20 years and was a member of the House Insurance Committee. He is a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters.
Johnson has been active in Democratic Party politics. She supports expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.
Heard also supports the ACA, which Hudgens has opposed.
Georgia is one of 11 states that elects its insurance regulator. Of these 11 states, California, Kansas and Oklahoma also have insurance commissioner elections this year.
