A physicians group with offices throughout Southwest Florida has notified 4,400 patients that their protected health information may have been breached.
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported that an employee at Florida Digestive Health Specialists LLP improperly accessed and photographed some personal patient records that included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and telephone numbers. The employee was fired.
Florida Digestive Health Specialists has 34 physicians and gastroenterologists in 18 offices from Largo to Port Charlotte.
The medical group said representatives from its office are now working with law enforcement, including the sheriff’s office and the Internal Revenue Service, to identify and prosecute any other recipients of the information.
Sheriff’s officials said they had not connected the breach at Florida Digestive Health to any other reports of identity theft.
