Montgomery, Alabama Mayor Todd Strange said he plans to propose an ordinance to give police authority to tow vehicles belonging to unlicensed or uninsured drivers who are involved in accidents.

The Montgomery Advertiser reported that currently someone who is pulled over for driving without insurance or a license is issued a citation and is allowed to continue driving the vehicle.

The proposed ordinance has caused some contention among city council members.

Supporters say towing is necessary because accidents involving unlicensed or uninsured drivers are unfair to licensed drivers with insurance policies.

Opponents say the proposal unfairly targets poor and working-class families.

Strange said he also plans to propose a similar ordinance for people driving on suspended, revoked or expired licenses.
