The York County sheriff’s office in South Carolina has reached a settlement with the family of a pedestrian struck and killed by a deputy’s patrol car.
The Herald of Rock Hill reported the sheriff’s office is paying $90,000 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.
The South Carolina Insurance Reserve Fund will pay the settlement and attorney’s fees. The fund provides liability coverage for the state and local governments.
Seventy-four-year-old Anton Hornung of York died in 2010 after he was hit by a patrol car while walking along a road.
Hornung’s family sued, saying Deputy Clifton Conant was negligent when he failed to see the victim and avoid hitting him.
The sheriff’s department said Hornung failed to watch for cars. Prosecutors did not file charges. Conant resigned in 2011.
