Unicoi County (Tennessee) Schools Director Denise Brown said she’s confident the cost of relocating an elementary school threatened by a sinkhole is covered by insurance.
Brown told the Johnson City Press that the contract through Risk Management Trust specifies the carrier will pay for relocation of the school while anything is done to or decided about Love Chapel Elementary School in Erwin. Brown said she had not heard back from insurance underwriter Travelers.
The county school board decided to group a dozen portable classrooms on district property for the next school year.
Love Chapel was closed after a sinkhole opened in August. It was 120 feet deep and grew to 25 feet in diameter.
Students were dispersed among other county schools for the current school year.
