A Winterville, North Carolina mother and daughter have been accused of conspiring with one another to alter medical bills and submit them to Farm Bureau Insurance Co. They received $1,264 as a result of these claims, officials allege.
Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced the arrests of Jacqueline Leigh Cherry, 19, and Rebecca Cherry Stilley, 39. Both women were charged with one count each of insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, and two counts each of conspiracy.
The documents submitted to the insurance company show Cherry received medical treatment for injuries stemming from two automobile accidents; the investigation alleged that the medical bills were phony and that Cherry had received no treatment from the medical facility on the dates provided.
Both women were processed at the Pitt County Detention Center and placed under a $20,000 secured bond, according to officials.
