South Carolina’s former state insurance director is running for lieutenant governor.
Eleanor Kitzman announced she’s running as a Republican.
The 53-year-old Columbia resident notes she’s the only candidate for the job who’s run a state agency. She was state insurance director from 2005 to 2007, when she resigned over a disagreement with Gov. Mark Sanford on coastal insurance and whether to expand the residual market Wind Pool.
Kitzman founded Driver’s Choice Insurance in South Carolina in 1999, after a change in state law allowed insurers to specialize in vehicle coverage. She grew the company to 50 employees before selling it.
Kitzman will face Ken Ard of Florence, Bill Connor of Orangeburg and Larry Richter of Charleston in the June 8 primary.
South Carolina hasn’t elected a female lieutenant governor since 1978.
