The former chief of the New Sight Volunteer Fire Department has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with seven years suspended for embezzlement.
Mike Boyd pleaded guilty this week in Lincoln County Circuit Court.
The Brookhaven Daily Leader reported Boyd also was ordered to repay the $24,356 he was accused of embezzling from the department’s small property tax collections and its insurance premium rebate fund.
District Attorney Dee Bates said an investigation found Boyd embezzled the money over a two-year period.
Bates said Boyd wrote checks to himself and used the department’s money to pay his cell phone and power bills, service his computer and charged the department’s Fuelman card to put gasoline in his personal vehicle.
