Some Biloxi homeowners who use the wind pool for insurance may qualify for a 20 percent credit on their coverage.
The wind pool — or Mississippi Windstorm Underwriting Association — is the insurer of last resort and offers insurance in areas deemed too risky by private companies. It is paid for by assessments charged to all insurers that write policies in the state.
Officials say policy changes and Biloxi’s efforts to enforce building codes could help some homeowners south of Interstate 10 qualify for the credit beginning July 1.
Biloxi Community Development Director Jerry Creel says residents with privately-sold wind insurance have enjoyed a 20 percent credit since before Katrina, and now those who have policies through the wind pool will qualify for the same benefit.
