In the end, a volunteer rescue squad in northeast Tennessee was unable to save itself.
The Bristol Herald Courier reported the Hickory Tree Rescue Squad in Sullivan County has ceased operation after 20 years.
Former squad president Jerry Craig said its insurance provider dropped coverage after the unit was unable to pay its bills. Without insurance, the squad no longer met the requirements of its first responder agreement with the county, said Emergency Management Agency director Jerry Fleenor.
The Hickory Tree Volunteer Fire Department has agreed to provide emergency response in eastern Sullivan County while a new rescue squad is organized.
Fleenor hopes that’s accomplished by the end of this year.
