Insured Damage from Recent Georgia Tornado Tops $40M, State Reports

State officials say damage from the tornado that hit north metro Atlanta last week now totals more than $40 million.

The tornado that touched down on May 20 caused extensive damage in Cherokee, Cobb, north Fulton and Forsyth counties.

Georgia Insurance Commission John Oxendine’s office released the new figures. Oxendine says it may be a couple of weeks before officials have final numbers.

The $40 million refers to insured losses. He says the figure may increase as more people file personal claims.

The yearly total of weather damage in the state now stands at about $415 million.

State officials have not yet released the total uninsured losses. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency will use the uninsured total to request federal relief funds.
