A nonprofit group is offering free assistance to miners who believe they have suffered retaliation from employers for reporting safety problems.
The Appalachian Center For the Economy and Environment launched the West Virginia Mine Safety Project on Monday. Buckhannon lawyer Nathan Fetty said he and two others on his staff will provide free legal representation to miners.
“I watched the Sago disaster unfold last year, and it seemed as if there was disaster after disaster,” Fetty said. “It just really struck a chord with me. And being an attorney, I wanted to pursue some public interest work anyway. This just seemed like a natural fit.”
Fetty said he hopes the project will encourage miners to report
safety problems.
