‘Tis the season…for extreme cold, freezing rain, snow and strong winds, therefore, it is important to inspect and winterize your home, according to West Virginia Insurance Commissioner, Jane L. Cline. The commissioner issued a press release urging homeowners to take precautions now to protect their homes from winter storms that can pose serious threats to people and property.

“Freezing temperatures, snow and wind can cause significant damage to homes,” Cline said. “Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to protect your home and family.”

Three preparations are:

First, winter storms can cause long power outages, so you should have an adequate, reliable and safe heating source inside your home;

Second, if your home does not have a fireplace, or you choose to use alternate heat sources, it’s important to practice safety, and

Third, adding extra insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces will also help.

“If you are going to be away for an extended period of time, be sure to take special care of your home before you leave,” Cline said. “Turn the water off and have the water system drained by a professional to keep pipes from freezing or bursting.”

Standard homeowners’ policies cover winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, damage caused by weight of ice or snow, as well as fire-related losses.
