The number of traffic safety cameras to catch drivers speeding or running red lights in New Orleans could nearly double next year.
The Times-Picayune reports Mayor Mitch Landrieu has proposed adding another 55 such cameras to the 66 already in use in the city as part of his 2017 spending plan.
Landrieu says the city was prompted to add the cameras following complaints from residents about safety at dangerous intersections.
Deputy Mayor Jeff Hebert says the new cameras will be focused on school zones and problem intersections. The estimated cost of adding the cameras is $3 million.
Officials say the new safety cameras will include 10 mobile units that will be used along “high-speed corridors.”
Landrieu previewed his proposed budget on Oct. 17 before officially presenting it to the City Council.
