A sinkhole that opened up alongside a downtown Oklahoma City street has swallowed a car, but the car’s two occupants escaped unharmed.

The sinkhole opened up on Sept. 8 near NW 2nd St. and N. Villa Ave. in downtown. Video broadcast by local television stations showed a small red car partially in a sinkhole about 20-feet wide that was full of water.

Emergency crews were on the scene and a wrecker was attempting to pull the car out of the sinkhole. Authorities say two women in the vehicle managed to crawl to safety through the vehicle’s rear window.

Officials say the sinkhole may have been caused by a water main break in the area.
