Leader of a South Texas city have approved a $700,000 settlement for female police applicants who failed a physical ability test.
The Corpus Christi City Council accepted terms of a federal consent decree. The Justice Department in July sued alleging sex discrimination by the test that few female applicants passed. Both parties have asked a court to accept the agreement.
Corpus Christi police have agreed to stop using the test and develop an alternative. Police will hire 18 women who did not pass the test but are considered eligible to be officers.
The physical ability test was changed by the city’s human resources department in 2005. Court hearings will be held for applicants affected by testing between 2005 and 2011 who could be eligible for a settlement.
