Two law enforcement officers from the New Orleans, La., area have been charged with plotting to make a fraudulent insurance claim.
A court filing charges former New Orleans Police Sgt. Kevin Guillot and former Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy Daniel Spears with conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Federal prosecutors say Guillot falsely reported that his truck had been stolen from a boat launch in Jefferson Parish last year. Spears allegedly wrote a false report to back up Guillot’s claim.
Guillot’s 34-year-old nephew, Anthony Venezia, also is charged in the case because he allegedly made false statements to his uncle’s insurer.
Guillot and Spears face maximum sentences of five years in prison and Venezia faces up to three years in prison if they are convicted.
