Texas Denies State Farm’s Catastrophe Petition

September 26, 2011

The Texas Department of Insurance has denied a catastrophe determination petition submitted by State Farm Insurance Cos. in response to wildfires that have plagued the state in September.

The department said it denied the petition based on the information provided by State Farm in its Sept. 12 submission.

The insurer sought a catastrophe determination in connection with numerous destructive wildfires occurring in the counties of Anderson, Bastrop, Bexar, Caldwell, Camp, Cass, Colorado, Fayette, Gregg, Grimes, Harrison, Henderson, Hill, Houston, Hunt, Leon, Limestone, Marion, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Palo Pinto, Red River, Rusk, Smith, Tarrant, Travis, Upshur, Van Zandt, Walker, Waller, and Williamson on Sept. 4, 2011, through Sept. 12, 2011.

The department said that a weather-related catastrophe or major natural disaster for the purpose of claims processing is not warranted at this time.

All claims resulting directly from the above-mentioned fires need to be processed following the deadlines provided in Texas Insurance Code, the department said.
