DeQuincy, La. residents will vote on a sales tax renewal that could help reduce property insurance premiums.
Mayor Lawrence Henagan tells revenue from the half-cent sales tax is used to support public safety and fire protection.
City Council Clerk Tammy Pinder said 58 percent of the funding goes to police. The fire department gets the rest.
During the last fiscal year, Pinder said the police received nearly $144,000 and the fire department about $104,000.
Henagan said the money is not used for salaries, but mainly to purchase equipment and pay for emergency responders’ training.
DeQuincy residents will vote on the renewal Nov. 19.
