The Senate is looking at banning drivers from using handheld cell phones in school and highway work zones, going a step further than a similar ban that passed the House this week.
The Senate is considering a proposal by Sen. Jerry Taylor of Pine Bluff. It would allow the use of hands-free phones and GPS devices by drivers.
A bill approved by the House would apply only to school zones. The House approved the measure a day after it was initially rejected.
A House committee is also expected to consider ethics legislation that prohibits lawmakers from becoming lobbyists until they’ve been out of the Legislature for at least one year. It also restricts travel reimbursements for lawmakers. An identical bill was approved by a Senate committee.
