Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Sanchez is contending that
Gov. Rick Perry should call a special session of the Texas Legislature to
deal with the state’s reeling homeowners market.

According to the Associated Press, Sanchez stated that the governor has been unresponsive to Texas consumers’ complaints about rapidly increasing homeowners’ premium rates. The Democrat demanded that Perry call a legislative session this week to address the issue, and accused him of caving in to the insurance industry because of its campaign donations to
him.

Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan countered that Texas lawmakers are in the
middle of hearings, and will address the issue in January. Although the governor has called for more regulation of the industry, he has announced no plans so far for a special session.
