According to the Consumer Protection Safety Commission, about 9,700 people in 2023 were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries. In its , CPSC said there is a “statistically significant trend” upward in the number of ER visits for fireworks per year.
The National Fire Protection Association adds that around 31,300 fires were started by fireworks in 2022 to structures, vehicles and outside areas. These fires caused an estimated $109 million in direct property damage, said the NFPA.

Most of the injuries and property damage from fireworks occur during the time before and after the Fourth of July. The danger of fireworks in general has been cited by firefighters as a potential cause of destructive wildfires, especially during drought.
The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) said a homeowners or renters insurance policy typically covers damage to property or bodily injury from the use of legal fireworks. However, policies often exclude coverage for unlawful activities, including the use of illegal fireworks鈥攁nd each state can have a different definition. Triple-I offers celebrations involving not just fireworks, but also grilling and pools.
