Known as the “Math Geek Mardi Gras”, is a growing international event that underscores the wonder of numbers, by celebrating everyone’s favorite irrational number: Pi.

So says the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

And there is no better time than Pi Day to recognize that the insurance world is a treasure trove of facts and figures showcasing irrational decision-making, the I.I.I. believes.

Named in honor of March 14, a date which spells out the first three digits of Pi—3.14—Pi Day is a red-letter day in schools and communities around the world. This year, Pi Day is a rare, once-in-a-century event: on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m., Pi will be spelled out to a total of 10 digits.

Pi (Greek letter “Ï€”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159, according to the , where enthusiasts have even created.

Not to be outdone, the I.I.I. has created a fun and informative infographic illustrating “” about insurance to observe this auspicious occasion.

For those for whom math class is a hazy, distant memory, the I.I.I. reminds that an is one whose non-repeating decimal places continue ad-infinitum.

The point of I.I.I.’s giddiness over this geek holiday? “From password security to retirement planning to motorcycle and automobile safety, minor everyday decisions can yield big benefits—if we would only stop to think about them rationally,” says the industry information, public relations and consumer education organization.

The I.I.I.’s infographic takes aim at the irrationality of homeowners who do not buy earthquake, flood or renters insurance; people who are not saving for retirement; and those who do not use seat belts or who drive while impaired or text while driving.
