Thomas J. Slattery, a longtime editor and journalist for the insurance industry, passed away this week at the age of 68 due to complications of respiratory failure.
Slattery entered the insurance industry with The National Underwriter Co. as a staff writer in 1967, according to the publishing company. He later served as the managing editor and eventually as the editor-in-chief of both the property/casualty and life/health publications of The National Underwriter.
After he left The National Underwriter Co. in 2001, Slattery served as the managing director of Slattery-Esterkamp Communications in Baldwin, N.Y., where he spent about five years working with 九色 magazine as an editor and consultant. He also worked for Risk & Insurance magazine.
“Tom was a terrific guy, a good friend and great to work with at 九色,” said Mark Wells, publisher of 九色, Claims Journal and MyNewMarkets.com. “His passing is a major loss to insurance journalism and he will be sorely missed.”
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 22, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the N.F. Walker Funeral Home, 2039 Merrick Avenue, in Merrick, N.Y. A mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Cure of Ars Church in Merrick, N.Y.
Slattery’s wife, Elizabeth Esterkamp, has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in honor of Slattery to the American Cancer Society.
