May 19, 2009

Neal S. Wolin has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

In February, Wolin was named deputy assistant to the President and deputy counsel to the President for Economic Policy. Wolin served as general counsel of the Department of the Treasury from 1999 to 2001 and as deputy general counsel from 1995 to 1999. He previously served as executive assistant to the National Security Advisor, Deputy National Security Advisor and Deputy Legal Advisor to the National Security Council.

From 2001 to 2008, Wolin served at The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., most recently as president and chief operating officer for Property and Casualty and previously as general counsel. Earlier in his career, he also worked in private law practice at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington, D.C.

“I am thrilled to have Neal return to the department. Neal brings a deep knowledge of the Treasury Department and strong managerial experience in both the private and public sectors, and I look forward to working closely with Neal at this critical moment in our nation’s history.” said Secretary Tim Geithner.

Wolin is a graduate of Yale College, the University of Oxford, and Yale Law School.
