The National Association of Mutual Insurance Cos. has released an detailing efforts underway to reform the tort systems of the several states.
In a statement publicizing the report, NAMIC said that the American tort system, “while generally strong … has become increasingly subject to abuse by a small segment of the legal profession.”
NAMIC cited as examples of abuse class-action lawsuits, unbid government retention of attorneys, forum-shopping, bankruptable appeal bonds, and joint and several liability. The report was compiled by Peter A. Bisbecos, the group’s director of legal and regulatory affairs.
The report includes an overview of the major issues and breaks down what reforms are on the table in each state.
