The Kansas Insurance Department distributed $16.8 million to firefighters across the state, funds generated by a two percent tax paid by insurance companies on fire and lightning insurance premiums written in Kansas.
The Kansas Firefighters Relief Act was created in 1895. Funds distributed through the program may pay for the health, accident, disability, and life insurance premiums of local firefighters, KID said.
Firefighter Relief Associations can also use funds to purchase safety enhancements such as new firetrucks, fire station building improvements, and firefighting gear.
