Two Kansas City Workers Die in Trash Truck Fire

A second Kansas City worker has died from injuries after a trash truck crashed and caught fire, police said.

The crash happened the morning of March 1 as the trash truck tried to exit Interstate 435 onto Front Street in northeast Kansas City, police said.

Investigators said the driver of the truck lost control on the exit ramp, causing the truck to overturn and hit a concrete barrier before erupting in flames.

A three-person crew was inside the wreckage. One was able to escape, police said in a news release, and a passing police officer helped pull the critically injured driver from the truck. The third city worker died at the scene.

Police said March 2 that the injured driver later died at a hospital. The third injured worker was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police have not released the names of the workers.

Michael Shaw, the city’s public works director, said he and his department are “absolutely devastated.”
